About
An invoice is the last thing a client sees of your work.
Folio exists so that it looks as considered as everything that came before it.
Why we made it
Most free invoice tools want something in return: an account, an email address, a logo of their own in the footer of your invoice, or a monthly fee after the third document. The invoices they produce look like what they are, a printout from a database.
We wanted the opposite. Open a page, type the details, and download an invoice that looks typeset rather than generated: proper typefaces, aligned figures, nothing that is not needed. Keep it on your own computer. Pay nothing. Folio is that tool, and it is the one we use for our own invoices.
Principles
- Documents, not dashboards
- An invoice is a letter with numbers in it. We design it like one: a clear hierarchy, honest typography and generous margins.
- Private by default
- Your invoices stay in your browser. We cannot read them, lose them or sell them, because we never receive them.
- Free where it matters
- Making an invoice is free and unlimited. We will only charge for things that genuinely cost us to run, such as sync.
- Restraint
- Every field earns its place. If you leave something blank, it simply does not appear on the invoice.
