Free Simple Invoice Template

One column, read top to bottom, with nothing on it that the client doesn’t need. When an invoice has three lines, this makes it look deliberate rather than empty.

Who it is for

A simple invoice is not a lesser one. If you bill a few items, a short and quiet page is easier to read, and easier to pay, than a grid built for forty lines.

This template uses a single column with generous margins. The dates and amount due are set as a quiet row of facts beneath the header, items are separated only by hairlines, and there is plenty of room at the foot for a personal note.

It suits writers, translators, tutors, coaches, therapists, musicians and anyone whose invoices usually have a handful of lines.

What to include

What a simple invoice still needs

Who it is from
Your name or business name, with an email address. Add a postal address and tax ID if your clients need them.
Who it is to
The client’s name, and their address if they are a business.
A number and a date
A unique invoice number and the date you issued it. Both are needed for anyone’s records, including yours.
What it is for
One line per piece of work, described plainly, with the amount.
When and how to pay
The due date and your payment details. This is the part a simple invoice most often leaves out.

Questions

What is the simplest invoice I can send?

One that shows who it is from and to, a unique number, the date, what it is for, the amount, and when and how to pay. That is a complete invoice for most small jobs; add tax details if you charge tax.

Can a simple invoice be handwritten or typed in an email?

It can, but a PDF with a number and your details is easier for the client to file and for you to keep track of. The generator makes one in a couple of minutes.

Is this template good for one-off jobs?

Yes. It is designed for invoices with a few lines, which is what most one-off jobs need.

Does simple mean less professional?

No. Clarity reads as professional. A well-set simple invoice looks more considered than a crowded one.
